The Texas and Austin economy are doing much better than the U.S. in terms of unemployment and growth rates. The Texas economy is in a deep recession but is weathering it better than the nation as a whole. The state's economy lost 274,600 jobs from June 2008 to June 2009, an annual job loss of 2.6 percent. Over the same period, the U.S. economy lost more than 5.8 million jobs or 4.2 percent of its total nonfarm jobs. The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 4.8 percent in June 2008 to 7.5 percent in June 2009, while the U.S. rate rose from 5.6 percent to 9.5 percent during the same period.
Austin ranks as the fifth best city in the state with a job loss rate of -.2% as compared to -2.6% for Texas and -4.2% for the U.S. Unemployment in Austin is 7.1% as compared to 7.5% for Texas and 9.5% for the U.S.
